In this video we will talk about Achalasia.
Achalasia is a rare, chronic disease that affects the ability of the esophageal muscles to move food and liquid from the throat to the stomach. It is caused by damage to the nerves in the esophagus that control the peristaltic contractions of the muscles, and the lower esophageal sphincter may not relax to let food pass into the stomach. The primary symptom is difficulty swallowing or dysphagia, accompanied by a sensation of food getting stuck in the throat, chest pain, and heartburn. Diagnosis involves a medical history, physical exam, and tests such as esophageal manometry, upper endoscopy, barium swallow, and high-resolution esophageal manometry. Achalasia can sometimes be difficult to diagnose, and other conditions that cause similar symptoms must be ruled out. Treatment options include medications, pneumatic dilation, and surgical procedures. If left untreated, achalasia can lead to complications such as weight loss, malnutrition, aspiration pneumonia, and esophageal cancer.
We will talk about the physiology of swallowing, the symptoms, causes, diagnosis, classification, treatment and differential diagnoses.
