Ferrocerium is the metal alloy used in most lighter flints, and it is engineered to produce sparks. It is made from a mix of rare earth metals, mainly cerium and lanthanum, combined with iron and other elements that make it extremely reactive.
When the lighter’s steel wheel scrapes against the ferrocerium rod, it shaves off tiny particles of the alloy. These particles heat up almost instantly from the friction, and because ferrocerium ignites at a relatively low temperature, they burst into bright sparks. Those sparks are what ignite the butane coming out of the lighter. Without the special chemistry of ferrocerium, a disposable lighter would not work.
