Packaging ISO 19165 Metadata model for preservation and Open Convention for data and metadata preservation example
Twenty five years ago, it was difficult to find geospatial information on the web and most of the cartography was still produced on paper and regularly preserved by specific cartographic libraries. Today, information is mostly produced, distributed and stored on digital media. Cartographic libraries were not initially prepared to deal with digital products. There was a risk to get through a “Digital Dark Age”.
Fortunately, ISO 14721:2012 defined a reference model for archiving digital information that is widely used by digital libraries. However, ISO 14721:2012 does not completely cover all the needs for data and metadata preservation for geospatial data in general.
Geospatial data possesses several distinguishing structural characteristics: Georeference to a well-defined section of the Earth characterized by a coordinate reference system (resulting in the possibility to transformations between different coordinate reference systems); exchange by specialized exchange formats that are unknown outside the geospatial world; link to thematic data (databases); large data volumes (in particular, the ones automatically derived from remote sensing satellites; existence of several levels-of-detail of the same dataset; and complicated access rights and intellectual property rights.
Therefore, ISO 19165 addresses geospatial data, its data model structures, the multiplicity of data formats, and intellectual property rights. ISO 19165 is modelled as a specialization of the geospatial metadata (covered in the ISO 19115‑1) to include and cover all aspects that are relevant for geospatial preservation. This metadata model includes aspects related to, identifiers, data formats and distributions, preservation actions, association with related resources; data value and preservation strategy, data fixity, packaging description, acquisition, and CRS. In addition the standard proposes a practical implementation of the preservation package suggested in the ISO 14721 based on the Open Packaging Convention (OPC).
The presentation finalizes with the description of an implementation of the Open Packaging Convention (ISO/IEC 29500‑2) in the MiraMon software called Compressed MiraMon Map (mmzx).
