A recent scientific study at the Kole Wetlands in Kerala has discovered 12 new species of pygmy grasshoppers, highlighting the rich insect biodiversity of this Ramsar site. In this video, we discuss the ecological importance of Kole Wetlands, located across Thrissur and Malappuram districts, and declared a Ramsar site in 2002. Known for its 300-year-old paddy cultivation tradition, this wetland is part of the Central Asian Flyway and is recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International. We also cover key facts about pygmy grasshoppers (order orthoptera), their habitat, features, and relevance for prelims under species in news. Highly important for environment and ecology preparation.
