Mother Teresa was an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary. She was born in Skopje, then the part of Kosovo Vilayet of the Ottoman Empire.
She lifed most of her life in India.
Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 which was a home for people dying of HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis. It also runs soup kitchens, mobile clinics, counselling programmes, orphanages and schools.
The motto was to give "wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor".
Some of the greatest honors given to her include :
Ramon Magsaysay Peace Prize in 1962.
Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
Padma Shri in 1962.
Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding in 1969.
Bharat Ratna in 1980.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of her birth, government of India issued a special ₹5 coin.
