Contact tracing is the key to keeping Oregon open and healthy. Major League Baseball teams are using it to contain the spread of coronavirus. School officials say contact tracing is critical in protecting the health of students and teachers if they return to classrooms in the fall.
But how does contact tracing work?
In short, contact tracing is used to quickly identify and isolate new coronavirus cases and the people they’ve been around to help slow the spread of the disease. Absent a vaccine or effective treatment, it is considered one of the only effective ways to stem outbreaks without shutting parts of the state back down.
In this video, Multnomah County senior communicable disease epidemiologist Taylor Pinsent gives an overview of how the contact tracing process works, some common scenarios and how contact tracers weigh coronavirus exposure risk.
