Faith... Spirituality... Natural Beauty... If you want to experience India’s culture and architecture all in one place, then plan a holiday to a destination in Uttar Pradesh—Mahoba.
Mahoba is situated almost midway between Jhansi and Khajuraho. Once a prominent region of the Chandela dynasty, Mahoba boasts an impressive hilltop fort and man-made lakes, showcasing remarkable engineering skills. Today, the city is known for betel cultivation and granite rock formations.
Start your Mahoba exploration with its ancient temples. The Kakramath Temple, Madan Temple, and Maniya Devi Temple add to the spiritual significance of this place. Right in front of Maniya Devi Temple, you’ll find a massive granite pillar, standing 18 feet tall and 1.75 feet wide at its base.
Mahoba's rich history is evident in its man-made lakes, such as Kirat Sagar, the scenic Madan Sagar, Kalyan Sagar, Vijay Sagar, and Rahila Sagar. For nature lovers, Vijay Sagar Bird Sanctuary is an excellent place to spend the day. The sanctuary offers great facilities for bird watching.
If you visit Mahoba, make sure to set aside time for Gorakhgiri Hill, especially if you’re an adventure enthusiast. This hill has been developed for rock climbing and other adventure activities. At the NBRI (National Botanical Research Institute), you can witness different stages of betel leaf cultivation. Along with betel farming, Mahoba’s flavored paan is an essential part of India's authentic culinary experience.
While you're here, don’t miss the local Bundelkhand cuisine. The most commonly eaten foods include chana dal, roti, and bharta. Some unique local dishes are Maad, Dubri, and Sannata. However, when ordering food, be sure to ask for less spice, as Bundelkhandi cuisine is known for its fiery chilies.
As of now, there are no big-brand hotels in Mahoba, but you can find good accommodation options at RRC Hotel, Hotel Hundred Palms Resort, Hotel Krishna Residency, and Hotel Moon.
