The boroughs of London, thirty-two in a row,
From Barking to Barnet, they put on a show.
They filed their accounts, all neat and on time,
Except for one council, in a state of a crime!
Hammersmith, Haringey, Havering, and Harrow,
Finished their homework, down to the last marrow.
But Hillingdon's ledger, it’s a pitiful sight,
They just couldn’t get it, couldn't get it right.

Oh, Hillingdon's homework, is forever delayed,
A financial report that’s been constantly swayed.
They missed their own deadlines, with a shrug and a groan,
Now they stand all by themselves, completely alone!

The paper was due back on June the thirtieth,
The deadline was statutory, the council took a pith.
They said, "September the first, we’ll be there in a flash!"
But that date came and went, with a whisper of cash.

The audit committee, on August twenty-eight,
Said, "Eight days, we’re ready, just you wait!"
But three weeks have passed, with no numbers in view,
While Wandsworth and Waltham Forest are long overdue.
…for a holiday, of course!

They blame it on software, a system called Oracle,
A new E.R.P. that’s more of an obstacle.
They say they’re just being robust, a little more thorough,
But they’re the only late party of every London borough!

From Richmond to Redbridge, they’re all shaking their heads,
At the borough that’s making a mess in its sheds.
They’re on the brink of bankruptcy, a very big claim,
And still they're not ready to play the numbers game.
So let’s hear it for London, a capital that’s so great,
With thirty-two boroughs that are never, ever late!
(Well, except for the one.)

So the accounts are still coming, so they say, so they swear,
Just don’t hold your breath, or sit in that chair.
Keep an eye out for Monday, September twenty-two,
But remember, they promised the first of the month, too!
