Bijele stijene: Rock & Roll on the Vihoraški Trail

Bijele stijene (“White Rocks”) is one of the wildest mountain landscapes in Croatia; a strict nature reserve famous for its chaotic limestone labyrinth and the legendary Vihoraški put trail that threads directly through its heart.

In late winter, my hiking partner Davor and I set out to explore this remarkable place. We expected a relatively easy day; Bijele stijene are not particularly high. As often happens in the mountains, we were completely wrong.

The Vihoraški trail proved demanding even in these conditions. The route constantly shifts between northern and southern slopes of the ridge, weaving through narrow rock corridors, around sharp limestone towers and across exposed passages. On the shaded northern side we encountered hard icy snowfields; on the sunny southern side the snow had already melted, forcing us to repeatedly remove and put back our micro-crampons.

Progress quickly turned into a mixture of scrambling on white limestone and sinking into soft spring snow; the “Rock & Roll” rhythm of the day.

Along the route we also passed an abandoned mountain hut damaged in recent years, standing in stark contrast to a newly built wooden emergency shelter nearby; an elegant and clever design that may well represent the future of alpine shelters in Croatia.

Despite the technical terrain, the weather was perfect. We started the morning below freezing, but the day soon opened into bright sunshine with almost no wind. The views over the rugged karst landscape were spectacular, and both our drones and action cameras stayed busy.

The approach road to the reserve is long and remote, but once inside the Bijele stijene limestone maze, every step feels like an exploration. Even in summer the Vihoraški trail is known for its length and complexity; in mixed snow conditions it becomes a true adventure.
