Wartburg Castle is a historic and iconic fortress located near the town of Eisenach in Thuringia, Germany. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its cultural, historical, and architectural significance.
Wartburg is tied to German folklore, including the legendary Minnesingers' Contest (Sängerkrieg), which inspired Richard Wagner's opera Tannhäuser. As the site of Luther's translation of the New Testament, the castle is a symbol of the Reformation and religious freedom.
Foundation: Wartburg Castle was founded around 1067 by Ludwig the Springer, a Thuringian count. Its name derives from "warte" (watchtower) and "berg" (mountain).
Medieval Significance: The castle became a residence for the Landgraves of Thuringia and a center of medieval culture and politics.
Luther's Refuge: Wartburg is famously associated with Martin Luther, who took refuge there in 1521-1522 under the alias "Junker Jörg" after being declared an outlaw at the Diet of Worms. During his stay, Luther translated the New Testament from Greek into German, a monumental step in making the Bible accessible to ordinary people.
Cultural Events: In 1817, the Wartburg Festival brought together students and reformists advocating for German unity and liberal ideas.
