Mount Erymanthus (Ἐρύμανθος, Erymanthos) stretches across Achaia and the border of Elis and Arcadia, rising to 2,224 m at Olenos peak—making it the fourth-tallest mountain in the Peloponnese. It is characterized by an irregular arrangement of ridges and isolated summits, with its northern part traditionally within Achaia and the southern within Arcadia.
Mythology deeply marks Erymanthos. The mountain is the setting for Heracles’s famed capture of the Erymanthian Boar—one of his Twelve Labors. According to Apollodorus, Heracles chased the giant boar down snowy slopes and captured it alive, carrying it back to Mycenae. The story, cited by Strabo, Pausanias, and Homer’s Odyssey, made Erymanthos legendary throughout Greece.
Greek sources also identify the mountain as sacred to Artemis. In classical times, its rugged wilds remained the domain of this hunting goddess, and archeological sites reveal traces of ancient sanctuaries and rural cults dedicated to Artemis and other rural deities. The goddess is said to have sent boars as punishment—her wrathful envoy—ravaging local fields as in the myth of Meleager.
Erymanthos is the source of several major Peloponnesian rivers, including the Erymanthos (a tributary of the Alpheios), Peneios, Selinous, Peiros, and Parapeiros. Its springs and forests supported small villages, ancient water mills, and agricultural terraces—a landscape evoked in Homeric epithets and described by geographers such as Strabo.
Modern archaeological findings on Erymanthos are scattered but include Mycenaean and Classical pottery near ancient trails, as well as sections of ancient boundary walls and rural shrines. The mountain’s remote location, challenging terrain, and harsh winters have preserved much of its wild character, making it a protected NATURA 2000 habitat today.
From antiquity through Byzantine and Ottoman times, Erymanthos was a shelter for hunters, rebels, and hermits alike, anchoring both mythic memory and real mountain life at the crossroads of Achaia, Arcadia, and Elis.
