Modern fighting games are facing a HUGE balance crisis — and it’s not just one game’s fault.
In this video, I break down why almost every major modern fighter is struggling with balance, using examples from 2XKO, Street Fighter 6, and Tekken 8 to show the trends shaping the entire genre.
Here’s what I cover:
🎯 1) The “Well-Rounded Power Creep”
Modern characters increasingly have no real weaknesses. Many of them excel in multiple archetypes at once — like Ekko in 2XKO — creating overloaded kits that are extremely hard to balance.
🎯 2) The Loss of Character Identity
When every character can do everything, the roster becomes more homogeneous.
This makes characters less unique and makes nerfs harder because devs don’t know what should stay strong.
Examples: Ekko (2XKO), Ryu (SF6), Anna (T8).
🎯 3) System Mechanics That Are TOO Powerful
Universal mechanics like Drive Impact/Drive Rush, universal launchers, burst-style tools, etc. are meant to keep the whole roster viable…
…but in reality they homogenize the gameplay and are usually abused better by the already-strong characters.
🎯 4) Accessibility vs. Balance
The push for accessibility might lead to some of these issues and, protagonists characters tend to show it as "well rounded" archetypes with no clear weakness (Jin, Ryu/Ken, Ekko/Yasuo). Great for new players…terrible for long-term balance.
