Stigma is when a person or group is judged or treated unfairly because of a negative belief or stereotype about them. Experiencing stigma can significantly impact the lives of people living with Parkinson’s. Stigma is associated with stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination, and exclusion.

Community engagement is also vital to combating stigma. Attending local events, like Moving Day, joining support groups, or participating in PD exercise classes helps people with Parkinson’s and care partners feel less alone. A strong sense of community grows when people see others not just living with Parkinson’s, but thriving with it.
