McDonald Arneson Traffic Master Flashing 6 Volt Beacon

This video demonstrates the McDonald & Areneson made the Traffic Master 4 bulb flashing beacon. There were many "4 way flashing" beacon lights (instead of rotating), the McDermott version is perhaps the best known.

McDonald & Areneson made the Traffic Master with the intention of placing it on an elevating pole. While this rarely occurred, the light itself was used on vehicles along the west coast in place of other similar lights in the late 1950s into the 1960s. This version is 6 volts but has a plastic flat-top dome which isn't the usual setup. The glass rounded dome versions are both 6 and 12, the plastic flat ones are usually 12 volts because they are usually made later. I don't have a date on this one, but it is likely a later one specified in 6 volts for some existing 6 volt vehicles.

These lights have 4 reflectors (not sealed beams) and each one has a separate kay-lab / deitz "pencil flasher", which are nearly impossible to find in 6 or 12 volt from this era. The McDermott used a single flasher (as did other brands) for a synchronized effect. The Traffic Master's 4 individual flashers cause an offset random effect.

This example has some "installation scuffs" inside the pipe mount, but also some signs of the through-base bolt holes being used, so I don't know how or where it was mounted.

One of the designers, Howard Arneson, went on to invent several pool cleaning devices and held other patents; living an interesting life to say the least.
