As a touring drummer who tends to play pretty much the same show night after night, I feel that consistent playing every show is a must. You're playing the exact same songs, with the exact same intros, outros, transitions, count-offs, stops, etc. I do understand that I'm stating the obvious because you're literally playing "the exact same thing every night." However, I want to take it a little more in depth.
Before I explain I want to be clear, I do NOT mean to not let yourself be creative. For example, if I want to change up a fill in a song and it works with the song, I'll continue to do that fill from then on so it'll be consistent night to night. So, please be yourself! But, change it & keep it! Also, I understand that some bands just don't roll this way, and that it completely ok, there are different situations for sure. You keep doing you!
Be consistent enough to where your bandmates won't have to play any guessing games on what you're going to do next. Make it to where they can rely on you when things go wrong. Why? Well, A, it's going to happen. And B, you're consistent and you can pick up the slack!! Make it a point to be consistent. I feel that that goes for everyone on stage as well, even down to the crew. Think of it like this: every musician playing consistently every show is like keeping an engine well oiled and running. The beauty of it is, just like an engine, you can add things to it (fills, stops, even new band members) to make it better! Moral of the story: be consistent. You'll make everyone else's life on stage that much better.
