STORYLINE:
Karachi's markets are bustling as shoppers throng to stores in preparation for Eid al-Fitr, the three-day holiday marking the end of Ramadan that's approaching.

However, the high inflation rate and reduced purchasing power have forced people to scale back on the number of items on their shopping lists.

Moazma, who only uses one name, said "prices have increased a lot. At other places, shopkeepers are asking double the prices.”

She eventually bought a set of clothing at a store offering 30% discount.

Pakistan's fast depreciation in the value of the rupee has caused prices of almost everything to rise sharply.

Nonetheless, shops that sell jewellery and shoes are faring relatively better.

After a month of fasting everyday from before sunrise to sunset during the holy month of Ramadan, people, especially girls, are excited about the upcoming Eid celebration.

They are visiting parlours for facials and mehendi, a form of temporary skin decoration traditionally done ahead of festivities.

“I have come here for my mehendi on both hands. The women here are so talented,” said Aaliya Odain, who lives in the UK and is in Pakistan to celebrate Eid.
