Entering the fight as a massive underdog, many expected Chimaev’s pressure wrestling and undefeated momentum to overwhelm Strickland early. And in Round 1, it looked exactly that way. Chimaev stormed forward with takedowns, back control, and multiple submission attempts that had Strickland surviving purely on toughness and composure.

But after weathering the early storm, Strickland completely shifted the momentum.

Using his trademark Philly Shell defense, nonstop jab, and improved takedown defense, Strickland slowly took control of the striking exchanges while forcing Chimaev into deep waters. As the rounds progressed, Chimaev visibly slowed down while Strickland continuously peppered him with combinations, counters, and volume striking.

Round 3 became a turning point as Strickland out-landed Chimaev heavily while stuffing every wrestling attempt. Even when Chimaev regained momentum in Round 4 with power shots and takedowns, Strickland refused to break.

Heading into the final round with the fight tied on many scorecards, Strickland surged late — landing cleaner strikes, defending repeated takedown attempts, and closing the fight stronger to secure the split decision victory.

With the win, Strickland becomes UFC middleweight champion for the second time in his career and hands Chimaev his first professional loss after a dominant undefeated run.
