How to Grow and Care For the Gloriosa Lily - Fact Sheet

We show you how to pot up and care for Gloriosa superba ‘Rothschildiana’ (Flame Lily or Fire Lily) which is a lily that is grown from tubers and is originally from East Africa. It is also the State flower of Tamil Nadu, the most southern state of India (Kanthal flower).

Growth Habit

These are a climbing plant with small tendrils on the leaf tips.

Flowering Time and flowers.

This is a warm season flowering plant and in warmer climate Zones will flower over a long period. In cooler zones they can be grown in containers and will flower in summer.

Light and Temperature

Best grown in a sunny position and they need to be frost free. USDA zones 10 an 11 for outdoors the ground. Other zones grow them in containers and overwinter indoors after lifting the tubers.

Protect from the het of the afternoon sun in warmer zones. Try to maintain good soil moisture and humidity and fertilise with an organic fertiliser every month in the growing season.

Soil

Humus rich well drained soil is essential.

Propagation

Easy from division of tubers as they mature and naturally seperate. Also possible from seed.

Toxicity

The stems, flowers and tubers of the Glorious Lily are all poisonous with the tubers being particularly toxic. Eating any part of the lily can be fatal for humans, the cats dogs and other animals. The sap can also be regarded as a poisonous irritant to touch.
