If you haven't watched the first video, I recommend it. It's a useful primer on some of the common physiological findings found in the South Asian population like Metabolic syndrome and atypical obesity.
In this episode, I cover all things Cardiovascular including Hypertension, Chronic kidney disease (this is not technically Cardiovascular but closely related), inflammatory and pro-thrombotic blood markers and heart and stroke risk.
The statistics related to heart and stroke risk and incidence is mind boggling - they are the very statistics that encouraged me to film this video and "share the message".
The last point I talk about in this video is genetics; people can get a little fatalistic here and assume they can't do anything about their genetics.
This is not the case at all.
I introduce the concept of epigenetics and the importance of
a. Knowing as much about our health and risk as possible
b. Doing something about it
If you had to chose between a and b - just go for b but opt for both ideally.
I regularly state that being south asian is an independent risk factor for dying younger - it's great to know the detail and to quantify the risk - but if you can't do this, you have to do something to mitigate this anyway.
Ideally, you do this with the guidance of an engaged healthcare professional. If not, generic lifestyle advice is a second best which is why i've linked to a video promoting healthspan (quality of life) and lifespan (length of life) called "5 habits to live forever" :
• 5 habits to live "forever"
It's not ideal, but it's a start.
Tune into the final instalment of this mini-series next week where we cover the behavioural and habitual factors that typify south asian populations; spoiler alert - they aren't good, but i promise you food for thought.
Till then, stay healthy.
