She became the managing director of the cosmetics brand Lakmé by 1961 and chairperson in the early 1980s (0:25-0:28). She innovated by tailoring products to Indian skin tones and climate and pioneered beauty salons (0:32-0:37).
In 1996, she sold Lakmé to Hindustan Unilever (0:47-0:49), using this as a launchpad to build Trent in 1998 (0:53-0:56). She rebranded Little Woods into Westside, a modern fashion chain with an Indian focus, and chaired Trent until 2006 (1:00-1:07). Trent is now a significant retail powerhouse (1:10-1:13).
Simone Tata was also involved in philanthropy, supporting the Sir Ratan Tata Institute (1:39-1:42). She passed away on December 5th, 2025, in Mumbai at the age of 95, after battling Parkinson's symptoms (1:43-1:52). Her legacy is defined by her quiet strength and significant impact on Indian retail and beauty (2:06-2:08).
