EMTs are the entry level position into the ambulance service. The EMT class is typically 12 weeks or one semester at a community college.
The Paramedic program is typically either 14-18 months if you gain a certificate or can be as long as two years if you gain your associates degree.
EMTs practice at the basic life support level, while paramedic practice advanced life support. What that means in simple terms is paramedics have more invasive skills and procedures and can give a lot more medications to the patient in the out of hospital environment.
Be great,

P.S. - Quick note you have to get your EMT certification before applying to Paramedic school, you must be an EMT first.
