Описание: This Rhapsody looks back towards late Romanticism with its wistful chromaticism, offering the pianist many possibilities for expressive shaping. Essentially it comprises a slow introduction followed by a sonata allegro, but the rather short exposition is almost a piano miniature in its own right (moving between C minor/Eb major and Ab via an upward secondary theme). After an exact repeat of this exposition the development section eventually works up a new version of the opening theme which becomes a driving force in the second half, relaunching the exposition in a more stirring guise. The piece was a chance to plot and experience the pull of different tonal forces, and to herd what seems like an unwieldy set of ideas into a resolution, establishing a firmer sense of key (C minor). As part of this resolution the melody from the introduction returns in a climactic chordal setting before a smouldering coda.
