Research shows that when teachers and schools take a systematic approach to helping students identify and learn essential vocabulary for a given subject area, student comprehension and achievement rises. During this session, you will be introduced to a method to determine which terms are most essential and learn a six-step process for direct instruction in subject-specific vocabulary. The six-step method encourages students to learn critical academic vocabulary by connecting terms to prior knowledge using linguistic and non-linguistic means. Games and activities further encourage the refinement and deepening of their understanding.
Learning outcomes:
• Understand how to design a schoolwide plan for comprehensive vocabulary instruction.
• Discover a research-based six-step process for teaching new terms.
