Grotta della Pastizza is a must-see of the tour of the Island Of Ustica.
The complex of the Pastizza caves is made of several underwater and on surface chambers.
The Grotta dell'Accademia is the inner part: it owes its name to the association "International Academy of Science and Techniques" which officially presented the cave to public in 1988.

(ITA) - La Grotta della Pastizza è una tappa obbligatoria per il giro delle grotte dell'isola di Ustica. E' un complesso composto da diverse cavità sommerse ed emerse.
La Grotta dell'Accademia, che si apre sul fianco sinistro del Grottone della Pastizza, deve il suo nome all'associazione Accademia Internazionale delle Scienze e Tecniche Subacquee ed è stata presentata al pubblico nel 1988.

The Snorkelling Route.
The boat is moored in the bay in front of the big cave, from where you get no idea of how it develops inside. Through a narrow crevice located on the western side we access into the Grotta dell'Accademia and proceed along the route in the footprints of late Camillone, an expert local guide of Ustica, a great connoisseur of the island.
Here you can step out from water and explore the big chamber, with "lakes", a rocky peninsular and huge rocks named as mountains. Air is breathable as long the entrance is on site, so better not to penetrate too much.
Swimming in darkness is impressive and you can encounter many species living in the darkness you never see during common snorkelling tours such as brittle stars, tiny shrimps or the Mediterranean cardinal fishes.
Once out of the cave we enjoy the lighted area of the big cave and peek through the crevices which overlook the underwater chambers of the eastern side.

La barca è ormeggiata nella baia di fronte al grottone, da dove non si ha idea di come si sviluppi all'interno. Attraverso uno stretta fenditura situata sul versante occidentale si accede alla Grotta dell'Accademia e si procede lungo il percorso sulle orme del compianto Camillone, usticese, grande conoscitore della propria isola e storica guida esperta.
Da qui usciamo dall'acqua ed esplorare la grande camera, con dei "laghi", una penisola rocciosa e enormi rocce soprannominate montagne. L'aria è respirabile fintanto che l'ingresso è a vista, quindi meglio non penetrare troppo.
Nuotare nell'oscurità è suggestivo e possiamo incontrare molte specie che vivono nell'oscurità che difficilmente possiamo vedere durante i comuni tour di snorkeling: le stelle serpentine, i minuscoli gamberetti o i Re di Triglie.
Una volta usciti dalla grotta ci godiamo la zona illuminata del grottone della Pastizza e sbirciamo attraverso le fessure che si affacciano sulle cavità sommerse del versante orientale.
