During the First World War, Henry Allingham served in the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS), which later merged with the Royal Flying Corps to form the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1918. As an air mechanic, he worked on early military aircraft and supported naval aviation operations. In 1916, at just 20 years old, he was present during the preparations for the historic Battle of Jutland, the largest naval battle of World War I. He later became the last known survivor of that battle and the final surviving founding member of the RAF.

After the war, Allingham built a long career as an engineer, including decades of work with Ford at the Dagenham plant. However, it was in his later years that he became a national symbol of remembrance. From the age of 105 onward, he made frequent public appearances to honor fallen soldiers and to ensure that the sacrifices of the First World War would never be forgotten. He attended ceremonies at The Cenotaph in London and received numerous honors, including France’s Légion d'honneur.

In June 2009, Henry Allingham became the world’s oldest living man at 113. He passed away peacefully on 18 July 2009, aged 113 years and 42 days. His life remains a powerful link to World War I history, British military heritage, and the enduring spirit of a generation that witnessed unprecedented global change.
