RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das in post monetary policy press conference on June 08 informed that, so far, about Rs 1.8 lakh crore worth of Rs 2,000 notes have come back to the banking system. This is about half the notes in value terms that were in circulation as on March 31, 2023. “As of March 31, 2023, 3.62 lakh crore notes were in circulation. So far, 1.8 lakh crore Rs 2,000 notes have come back post the announcement. This is roughly about 50 per cent of the Rs 2,000 notes which were in circulation,” said RBI Governor.
“About 85 per cent of the Rs 2000 notes are coming back as deposits into bank accounts. This is in line with our expectations. There hasn’t been any rush in banks either,” he added. Governor Shaktikanta Das also appealed to citizens not to wait for the September 30th deadline for exchanging or depositing Rs 2,000 currency notes and added not to panic either. “Please avoid the last-minute rush in exchanging or depositing Rs 2,000 notes. There is no shortfall in currency, we have ample notes for exchange. Don’t panic, no rush, but don’t keep it for the last days of September,” he further said.
