Hey, it’s Matt with Midwest Guns and Gear, and welcome back to another Wheel Gun Wednesday!
Today we’re looking at the Ruger Vaquero — specifically the original Vaquero chambered in .44 Magnum. Ruger introduced the Vaquero in 1993 as a single-action revolver styled after the Colt Single Action Army, designed to appeal to cowboy action shooters.
The original Vaquero (1993–2005) was built on a larger Blackhawk frame and could safely handle high-pressure .45 Colt loads and .44 Magnum, unlike the New Vaquero (2005–present) which is built closer to Colt dimensions.
In this video we’ll cover:
History of the Ruger Vaquero revolver
Differences between the original Vaquero and New Vaquero
Grip styles (standard, Bisley, bird’s head)
Ruger-only handloads & high-pressure capability
My personal shooting impressions with .44 Magnum at the range
⚡ Range Demo: Watch as I put six rounds of .44 Magnum through this classic single-action revolver. While it’s definitely snappy on the wrist, it’s a blast to shoot and makes a fantastic carry piece when out in the woods.
