There's an odd feel in the air at The Shrine a day after Sammy Peralta Sosa accidentally grabbed his corked batting practice bat, used it in a game and was ejected. A majority of the 33,000 in the stands (many couples, perhaps taking in their first ball game together) cheer the prodigious slugger when he steps to the plate for the first time in the bottom of the first, but Slammin' Sammy does unfortunately hear a few boos. Sammy is relatively quiet in this one, striking out three times while recording one single in The Beloved's 5-2 loss to the Devil Rays. Tampa's young stars Carl Crawford and Rocco Baldelli star in this one as the Woonsocket Rocket has three hits and scores two runs. Boy does he just glide around the bases or what? It's too bad he had that weird medical codition. He was fun to watch. CC knocks in two runs and shows off his speed with a stolen base. In the ninth inning, Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella turns to Lance Carter, who is certainly in the team picture for worst all-star player of all time. Carter, who would be out of baseball three seasons later, has a shaky ninth but ultimately finishes the game.
