Common Genets (Genetta genetta) are small (about 50 cm/20 inch, excluding their tails which is also about 50 cm/20 inch), catlike carnivores. Males weigh about 2 kilo/4.5 lb and are larger than the females. They feed on smaller mammals (mostly mice), lizards and small birds, but also on invertebrates and fruits like figs and olives.
Common Genets mainly live in Africa and were brought to the Mediterranean from northern Africa as pets around 1000 – 1500 years ago and they have since expanded their distribution in Europe to Portugal, Spain and southern France. During the day they rest in higher parts of tall trees and being solitary and nocturnal, they are quite difficult to see.
