Derby Time Traveller series : 49 Sadlergate - Frosts butchers to Mr Shaws House 1900 to 2025

Описание: In this Derby Time Traveller series video I’m standing outside 49 Sadler Gate, Derby which is located halfway down Sadler Gate.
In the 1900 view you can see Mr Frost the owner standing in the doorway with a bowler hat on, his two assistants in cloth caps one holding onto the horse.
What I absolutely love about this then and now is you can clearly see that those decorative carved wooden windowsill end blocks at the ends of the "49 FROST. 49" sign from 125 years ago are the same ones in 2025.
I have colourised the original photograph taken by WW Winter in 1900 and its really brought it to life, look at all those meats on display, Black puddings and Sausages piled up in the window.
This was a staged photograph presumably taken to promote their butcher’s shop.

If you’re watching this on a small screen, then you won’t be able to read the large sign above the doorway which reads
"Frost's Pies & Sausages Take the lead! Pork Stores, Derby Sadler Gate & Market Hall"

Notice how 125 years ago Sadler Gate had had a pavement and road, unlike today where it is full pedestrianised.

Mr Shaw's House is quite an interesting place, it’s many things - Its a venue with bespoke clothing, DJ nights, coffee shop, live music and craft beer place. What a wonderful idea !
Its a family run business which opened on Saturday 27th May 2023.

In 2015 this shop was Silvarious, does anyone know what other shops this has been over the years?

Sadler Gate is a very historic thoroughfare in Derby, first recorded in 1248 as Vicum Sellariorum.
Most of the frontages here are Georgian in style, however some of the buildings behind them are 16th century. It was the first ever street in Derby to be pedestrianised following a campaign by Derby Civic Society in 1963. Sadler Gate is full of wonderful independent retailers.

Please note that the Then & now section on my website is currently in need of a revamp as they were all created back in 2005 using Flash and this is no longer supported so I will have to recreate all of my work again using a different method. In the meantime I'm publishing them on my YouTube channel like this one.
