Kanazawa Castle (金沢城, Kanazawa-jō) is a large, partially restored Japanese castle in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan.

It is located adjacent to the celebrated Kenroku-en Garden, which once formed the castle's private outer garden. I’ll soon post a complete tour of that beautiful garden, so be sure to turn on notifications and you’ll be one of the first to know when it’s posted.

The castle is built on the highest ground between the Sai and Asano rivers.

A system of moats and canals surround the castle for extra protection.

The castle's distinctive, whitish roof tiles are made of lead. The reason for that is not only are they fireproof, but (legend says) in times of siege, the tiles could be melted down and cast into bullets.

Most of the current buildings are reconstructions based how the castle looked in the 1850s.

After passing through the first gate, an intruder must make an abrupt ninety degree turn to pass through the tower gate which is on the inner wall. Most had a second story guardhouse fitted with arrow and gun slots aiming down towards the entrance.

Only a limited number of attackers could fit into the rectangular courtyard at any one time making it extremely difficult for a large contingent of troops to storm the castle. Once trapped in the courtyard, it was easy for defenders to pick them off from the walls and tower gate.
