A really exciting passion project over these last few weeks have been getting my Li'l Jazz Box up and running. It was sitting for a quite while, in really good shape and super clean, at Currie's Music up in Gravenhurst, ON when I found it. It was tuned in 'guitar tuning' or 'Chicago tuning,' just the top 4 strings of the standard guitar. I've always fantasized about a smaller and smaller guitar (you may have seen the mini-strat if you were around for any of my bar gigs in the beforetimes) and I just wondered what would happen if I allowed myself to just keep the tenor in guitar tuning and go for it. With the guiding light of Tiny Grimes before me, I got one of the new DeArmond Rhythm Chief pickups and had the wonderful shop downtown, Paul's Boutique, add that and a volume knob and an endpin jack.
Through an amp it sounds totally awesome and quite dirty, very Tiny Grimes and very jump blues. Through my analog mixer though, it is so, so clean and I just got too excited about the whole thing and have been experimenting all night, here's a jam on the classic Django tune 'Coquette.'
The guitar's going straight into my analog board, then I've got a cab simulator in my DAW providing a speaker. Reverb's coming from an '80s Boss 'micro rack' unit. The backing track I'm using is from the well-loved Gonzalo Bergara backing tracks you can find on his youtube channel and for sale on his website.
