Panic gripped Jammu and Kashmir's premier ski resort on Monday afternoon after a massive, sudden technical malfunction brought the world-famous Gulmarg Gondola cable car service to an abrupt halt during peak hours. The severe technical snag—suspected by engineers to be a system overload that triggered automated emergency brakes—instantly froze the line, leaving approximately 65 cable car cabins suspended helplessly mid-air over steep, heavily forested mountainous terrain. Over 300 tourists, including terrified families with young children and elderly visitors completely unaccustomed to high-altitude crises, were left trapped for hours as local temperatures plummeted. The critical failure forced an immediate, total operational shutdown of both Phase I (connecting the Gulmarg base to Kongdori) and Phase II (which ascends directly to the Apharwat Peak at an altitude of nearly 3,950 meters).
