Year: 1960

Origin: Introduced on the album Coltrane's Sound.

Style: Swing, typically played at an up tempo.

Form: A-B-A-C (36 Bars) [8-8-8-12]

Coda: The V7sus pedal that finishes the form is typically used as an extended outro vamp. On the original recording Coltrane also cues the band out by stating a new melody.

Key: G Major

Harmony/Overview: This composition is based on the Lewis/Hamilton standard "How High the Moon". Coltrane changes are used throughout the piece, reharmonizing the harmony by constantly shifting tonal centers in Major 3rds. The V7sus pedal at the end of the form helps add a brief modal touch to the piece, contrasting with the otherwise intense set of chord changes.

Recordings: Not Coltrane's most widely known compositions, it has been recorded just over a dozen times to date. The first recording comes from Coltrane's 1960 album Coltrane's Sound. It continues to be performed to this day and still manages to present a challenge to even the most veteran of soloists.
