We cover medieval Europe, where the Church and the medical establishment actively discouraged bathing — creating centuries of deliberate filth that contributed to catastrophic plagues.

Then we tell the story of Ignaz Semmelweis, the Hungarian physician who proved in 1847 that handwashing with a simple chlorinated solution could cut maternity ward deaths by ninety percent. His colleagues called him a madman. They destroyed his career. He died in an asylum at forty-seven — from the same type of infection he had spent his life trying to prevent.

We follow soap through the Industrial Revolution, when companies like Lever Brothers and Procter & Gamble turned it from a luxury into a household staple. And we end in March 2020, when a global pandemic reminded the entire world of a truth that had been established science for over a hundred and seventy years: wash your hands.
