Europe’s leading defence powers—Germany, France, the UK, Italy, and Poland—announced a joint initiative to develop low-cost military drones and autonomous platforms under the LEAP project. The plan aims to produce cost-effective “effectors” within a year, drawing lessons from the battlefield in Ukraine.
At a summit in Krakow, ministers emphasized the need for Europe to strengthen its military capabilities while maintaining strong transatlantic relations. Discussions also touched on a potential European version of the Five Eyes intelligence alliance to enhance collective security.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas added that the European Union will adopt a 20th sanctions package against Russia on Monday, further pressuring Moscow amid its ongoing war.
The LEAP project represents a major step in Europe’s efforts to modernize its defence and maintain strategic independence while responding to increasing global threats.
