The birth of a baby does trigger a plethora of powerful emotions, from happiness, excitement, joy to fear, stress, anxiety. But it can also result in something which is unexpected — Depression.
Postpartum includes mood swings, crying spells, anxiety and difficulty sleeping.
Most new moms experience postpartum "baby blues" after childbirth. Baby blues typically begin within the first two to three days after delivery, and may last for up to 4 months.
But some new moms experience a more severe, long-lasting form of depression known as postpartum depression. Rarely, an extreme mood disorder called postpartum psychosis also may develop after childbirth. In such cases, taking a medical care is advisable.
Postpartum depression is temporary and must be treated as a passing phase. It isn't a character flaw or a weakness. Sometimes it's simply a complication of giving birth.
Your Partner and Family members can be your biggest source of support if you have postpartum depression. So talk openly about your feelings and remember that prompt treatment can help you manage your symptoms and help you bond with your baby effectively.
