E36 cars require 5 quarts for the four-cylinder cars, and 6.0-6.5 for the six cylinder cars

-Torque the Drain plug to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs) for the 17mm or 60 Nm (44 ft-lbs) for the 19mm drain plug.

In general, if you live in a cold climate, you should use a 10W-40 or similar oil. This oil is a 10-weight oil that behaves and protects against heat like a 40-weight oil. In warmer climates, you should use a 20W-50 oil.

Tools Needed-
Oil filter wrench,
roll of paper towels
very large drain pan (7-qt. capacity),
4-7 quarts of oil
17mm or 19mm wrench,
floor jack and two jack stands,
metric socket set and ratchet,
flatblade screwdriver,
torque wrench
