From today, plastic bags are criminalized in Ethiopia.
Under Proclamation No. 1383/2016 E.C. (Solid Waste Management and Disposal Proclamation), the use, manufacture, importation, distribution, selling, storage, and possession of plastic bags for commercial purposes are prohibited.

⚖️ Key Legal Points:
Using or intending to use plastic bags: Fine of 2,000 – 5,000 Birr

Fine of 50,000 – 200,000 Birr and imprisonment up to 5 years
If committed by an institution, the penalty is tripled
