''Stay, Spring' Music by John Whittaker. Words by Andrew Young. Performed by Peter Edge (baritone) and John Whittaker (piano) at Diss Church, 2022.
Song no.3 from the Song-Cycle 'By Each Hedge and Hill' by John Whittaker
STAY, SPRING
Stay, spring, for by this ruthless haste
You turn all good to waste;
Look, how the blackthorn now
Changes to trifling dust upon the bough.
Where blossom from the wild pear shakes
Too rare a china breaks,
And though the cuckoos shout
They will forget their name ere June is out.
That thrush too, that with beadlike eye
Watches each passer-by,
Is warming at her breast
A brood that when they fly rob their own nest.
So late begun, so early ended!
Lest I should be offended
Take warning, spring, and stay
Or I might never turn to look your way.
