One thing I forgot to mention:
The reason why warmer air is less dense and less tightly packed is due to higher kinetic energy. Think about it like this... the warmer air makes it easier for the particles to move and bounce around so they're very spread apart! As for colder air, think about the way you can barely move your fingers in the Winter when you forget to put your mits on. It's very hard for the particles to move because it's so cold out so in this case they're more tightly packed :)
