Regarding the strength of the Tang Dao, I'd say it's in a pretty awkward spot right now. However, when it was first released, it was undoubtedly one of the strongest builds. It boasted extremely high damage, powerful Golden Attacks that could frequently break defense, and excellent feel—top-tier in both PvP and PvE.

But as players studied the weapon more, its performance in PvP has become increasingly average. Because the startup for Golden Attacks is very slow, they are easily dodged in high-level matches. This forces you to rely on more set play patterns. In high-level play, being too formulaic might mean your attacks keep whiffing. So, here's a little trick for the Tang Dao: for a few seconds after performing a Golden Attack, your light attacks change into a very fast three-hit slash combo. This combo has wide range and a slight vacuum effect. So, during neutral game with a player, you can intentionally whiff a Golden Attack to store one charge of this Slash Combo, then close in to attack with it. The combo comes out very fast and can catch inexperienced players off guard for a follow-up.

However, this whole combo's mechanic is limited by the Golden Attack. Its slow startup caps its potential ceiling. That said, its floor is very high. It has excellent light and heavy attack properties and incredible posture gauge damage. If your opponent makes a mistake and you catch them, their health bar will absolutely melt!
