Today on Fundas with RaGa, we explore one of the most cherished artforms in Carnatic music: Ragam–Tanam–Pallavi (RTP)
It begins with the Raga alapana – a free-flowing exploration of the melodic landscape, where the raga reveals its colours without rhythm or constraint.
This moves into Tanam, where a gentle pulse emerges. The pace builds, the texture thickens, and the music takes on that distinctive lilting movement we associate with phrases like “aanantham.. anantham.”
Then comes the heart of the form: the Pallavi : a single lyrical line set to a chosen Tala. The Pallavi is followed by niraval and kalpanaswarams.
Ragam–Tanam–Pallavi is where structure and imagination meet – a journey that begins in contemplation, gathers momentum, and ends in a vibrant, uplifting finish.
