How can your research directly contribute to solving real-world challenges? In this immersive one-week course, graduate students will explore the principles and practices of community engaged scholarship — a collaborative approach to research that centers the priorities of local communities. Through sessions with faculty experts, hands-on workshops, and peer exchange, students will gain a deeper understanding of how to co-create research agendas that are both academically rigorous and socially impactful.
This course brings together scholars from across Stanford who are leading efforts in areas like climate justice, public health, education equity, and criminal justice reform. Participants will explore how to build ethical partnerships, co-design research questions, and translate findings into action. The week concludes with a short research memo to guide students’ future engagement in this space.
The course will be participatory and reflective, featuring guest speakers, interactive discussions, and a local field visit.
Audience: Open to incoming* and returning graduate students in any discipline, especially PhD students. Postdoctoral scholars may apply during the rolling application period beginning July 7.
(*MSx Class of 2026 and first-year MBA students are ineligible due to program requirements.)
