I'm here to set it straight, what to focus on, how to focus on it, and you can improve your search engine rankings by performing on-page speed optimizations.

Most important takeouts:
Focus on optimization of images, and assets such as CSS and JS, these will improve your load time the quickest.
Install and implement a CDN to improve the localization of assets closest to where the end-user is located.
Lazyload images and load unrequired JS after the first-contentful load.
Make sure you're not focusing on total load time, but first-contentful load times as these are the numbers Google, Bing, and Other Search engines care about.
Make use of multiple performance tools, each tool offers different insights, and not one tool is perfect. Using multiple tools will help identify the best way forward.
