On 8 July the Benedictine abbot Elia (+ 1105) demolished a large part of the catepano palace and some minor ecclesiastical buildings, thus starting the majestic construction.To him must therefore be attributed the masonry structure, somewhat approximate (north side longer than the south by about two meters), and the stupendous sculptural furnishings (Chair of Abbot Elia, Portal of the Lions and capitals of the ciborium), all finished by his successor, Abbot Eustathius (+ 1123).
