Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with senior officials from both countries on Wednesday, asking them to "preserve peace and security in South Asia." He informed Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif of the need to condemn the attack and restore direct communication, according to a statement from the State Department. Rubio also spoke with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

Relations between the nuclear-weapon states and the long-time adversaries deteriorated sharply after the attack, which India and the United States called a terrorist act. The government of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accused Pakistan of involvement in the attack and promised to punish those responsible. Pakistan denies any connection to the attack and has warned of retaliation if India takes military action.

In a televised address shown shortly after midnight on Wednesday, Pakistan's Information Minister Attaullah Taar said his country had "reliable information" that India would take military action in the next 24-36 hours. A few hours later, at a press conference, a representative of the Pakistani armed forces, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, said that the country's response to any Indian aggression would be "appropriate and decisive."
