🙏 Sanatana Dharma and the Glory of Kashi: Shantanaveshvara Mahadeva
Based on the Sanatana Dharmashastra and the Kashikhanda of the Skanda Purana, Bhagwan Vishveshvara Shiva Himself resides everywhere in His beloved city of Kashipuri in the form of innumerable, manifest Linga-s. A soul who beholds these divine Linga-s attains Sayujya Mukti (union with the divine) through the grace of Avimukta Kshetra (Kashi).
The Sacred Viraja Tirtha and Trilochan Mahadeva
In this very Sanatana tradition, near the holy Viraja Tirtha and Trilochan Mahadeva, countless extremely sacred Shivalinga-s are established. When devout seekers arrive here and behold and touch these Linga-s, the Ocean of Compassion, Shiva, Himself purifies them and grants divine welfare, peace, and ultimately, Moksha (liberation).
The scripture says:
तत्र शान्तनवं लिङ्ग गङ्गातीरे प्रतिष्ठितम् ।
तदृष्ट्वा शान्तिमाप्नोति नरः संसारतापितः ॥ ७७
"There, on the bank of the Ganga, a Linga named Shantanava is established. By seeing it, a person afflicted by the sorrows of the world attains peace."
Origin of Viraja Tirtha and King Shantanu
गंगातटे तु विरजातीर्थमनुत्तमम्। यत्र सिद्धोमहाभाग तपस्तप्त्वाद्विजोत्तमः॥१
"On the bank of the Ganga is the unparalleled Viraja Tirtha, where the great and best of the twice-born (Dwija-shreshta), upon performing penance, attained Siddhi (perfection)."
Maharaja Shantanu was a glorious king of the Kuru dynasty in ancient India. He was the ruler of Hastinapura, a descendant of the Bharata lineage, and the great-grandfather of the Pandavas and Kauravas. In his previous birth, he was King Mahabhisha of the Ikshvaku dynasty. Due to a curse with Devi Ganga in Brahmaloka, he was born on Mrityuloka (Earth).
In this present birth, to regain Ganga and be freed from the curse, Maharaja Shantanu performed penance at the Viraja Peetha in Kashi. With the blessing of Mahadeva, he remarried Devi Ganga (a stream of the divine river) and was reunited with her, near the Gangeshvara Lingam there.
The Significance of Shantanava Tirtha
King Shantanu, devoted to the meditation of Shiva, resided in this Shantanava Tirtha while fasting. It is due to his name that this Tirtha (pilgrimage site) became famous across the three worlds (Trailokya). O Devi, all the wishes of those who are victorious over anger, truthful, benefactors of all beings, and who perform ritual bathing, Tarpaṇa (offering to ancestors and deities) here, are fulfilled.
Those who remain fasting here, dedicated to truth and purity, undoubtedly gain the fruit of the Sautramani Yajna. Those who chant the Rigveda (Rigvedis), Samaveda (Samavedis), and Yajurveda (Yajurvedis) here, attain the highest fruit. Shankar (Shiva) declares that whoever duly leaves their body at this Shiva Tirtha established by Shantanu and named after him, attains a state from which there is no return to the cycle of rebirth.
The Practice for Marital Harmony and Moksha
Furthermore, the Kashi Mahatmya describes: Those beings who worship the Mukha Linga established by Maharaja Shantanu and the Gangeshvara Shivlinga established by Ganga simultaneously, attain a calm, happy, and Moksha-giving married life. It is also foretold, O Devi, that after 5000 years of Kaliyuga pass, the influence, mantras, worship methods, and mudras (hand gestures) of this Tirtha will be lost, and even those residing in Kashi will be deprived of this Tirtha and its ritual of worship.
मण्डलेश्वरसामीप्ये मुखलिङ्गं च तिष्ठति। शान्तेन स्थापितं लिङ्गं सर्वपापहरं शुभम् ॥ २५
"Near Mandaleshvara, the Mukha Linga is situated. That auspicious Linga, which destroys all sins, was established by 'Shanta' (Shantanu)."
