STORYLINE:
Supporters of an Islamist party in Pakistan rallied on Friday in Islamabad to show solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip following a year-long war in the enclave.
The protesters shouted anti-Israeli and anti-American slogans while marching in the Pakistani capital carrying Palestinians flags.
The head of Jamaat-e-Islami party, Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman had called for solidarity rallies across the country on Friday.
The war in Gaza began after Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting another 250.
Around 100 hostages are still inside Gaza, a third of whom are believed to be dead.
Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed almost 43,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not differentiate between civilians and combatants but says women and children make up more than half the fatalities.
The Israeli military says it has killed over 17,000 fighters, without providing evidence.
Israel’s yearlong offensive against Hamas has been one of the deadliest and most destructive in recent history, according to researchers and aid organizations.
There has been staggering destruction across the Gaza Strip, with entire neighborhoods obliterated and mountains of rubble laced with decomposing bodies left behind.
"Israel should be stopped," said protester Sakeena Shahid, who called on the international community to take a tougher stance especially as the scope of the conflict widens.
A year after Hamas’ fateful attack on southern Israel, the Middle East remains embroiled in a war that shows no signs of ending.
