Madagascar is the World's fourth largest country, and has some of the richest mineral reserves in the world. Most of the Malagasy people, however, do not benefit from the wealth, living on less than a dollar per day. Hoping to strike it rich, many of the Malagasy have started their own artisan mines. The rush to find gold and precious stones has fueled a modern gold rush. Eastern areas of the Island have lost a significant forest cover on an island where nearly 85 percent of the pre-human forest is already gone. Poverty in paradise is fairly common around the world, where in their need to survive, people also damage sensitive environmental areas.
Madagascar is a land of wonders. Most species living on this, the World’s fourth largest island, are found nowhere else. While it is right off the east coast of southern Africa, the wildlife is very different than anything found in continental Africa.
